Our Lady of the Place

October 3: Our Lady of the Place, Rome (1250)

Abbot Orsini wrote: “This image having fallen into a well at house of Cardinal Capocius, in year 1250, water swelled up miraculously, & cast out image, which cardinal placed in his chapel.
But Pope Innocent IV obliged him to build another on the very spot where miracle had occurred.
This chapel having been given to Servites, they have had a fine church built, in which well is enclosed.”

The church of Santa Maria in Via, dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary, is also known under special title of Madonna del Pozzo, Our Lady of the Well.
The church that presently stands at location was built between years 1491 & 1513, & is not one originally commissioned in 1256.

The miracle that Abbot Orsini mentions actually occurred in year 1256, on evening of 26 & 27 September. At that time Cardinal Pietro Capocci had a residence at location, & one of his servants either accidentally or deliberately, it is no longer known, threw an image of Blessed Virgin Mary into well of stable.
The image was painted on a heavy stone tablet, but it never struck bottom of well.

Before image of Blessed Virgin had gone very far, water inside well suddenly rose up & over top of well & flowed abundantly in all directions with such force that image of Mary was suspended upon surface of water.

The horses were alarmed by rushing water, bringing rest of domestics from their various places to witness miracle.
The image remained where it was until cardinal himself responded, & with devout astonishment, retrieved sacred image that appeared to be miraculously floating on water.
Once image was taken, water immediately receded.

The first church, Santa Maria in Via, was already built nearby, & was a titular church.
It is no longer known why it was so named, but it is known that Cardinal Pietro Capocci had a residence there.
When Pope Alexander IV learned of event, he declared it to have been a miracle & ordered construction of a new chapel dedicated to Blessed Virgin.

The new chapel was built over well, & was an annex to older church.
The fountain can still be seen on right hand side upon entering church.
It was Pope Innocent VIII who ordered construction of church that can presently be seen.
In year 1513 church was given to Servites by Pope Leo X, & Servite Order still remains there to serve church.
